It's a tough climate, we know.

Did you know that box office income and government funding cover only 60% of our costs? For the rest we rely on sponsorship and private donations.

We've had a great start to the year. Our audiences are growing. Even so, we'd like to provide more access to younger audiences, and that's why we're inviting you to contribute.

You might have read about our Ambassador programs. This is a yearlong program for almost 200 high school and tertiary students from across Brisbane and beyond. Ambassadors attend all productions for free, meet with creative teams, enjoy free workshops through year, learn about La Boite programs, and take a leadership role in introducing the work of La Boite to their peers, schools, and families. In 2010, they come from across Brisbane and as far away as Gladstone and Bundaberg.

It's been great to see so many feeling a genuine part of what we do. We hope it's the beginning of a life-long relationship with theatre and the arts. With your help we can keep these programs alive. What will your donation do?

• $150 will enable an Ambassador to attend La Boite shows for a year.
• $300 will enable an Ambassador to attend shows and participate in workshops for a year.
• $600 will enable four Ambassadors to enjoy La Boite's shows for a whole year.

Larger donations are, of course, welcome and will help us achieve much -

• $1000 means that we can spend two days with actors developing a new play by a local writer.
• $5000 means that we can begin development of a community project in a regional area.
• $10,000 means that we can create a one-year mentorship program for young directors.

  La Boite has always been a place of opportunity. Fresh approaches, new work and the development of talented young artists have been constants in the company's life. We need your support to continue this journey.

  Deborah Mailman knows that. With great performances for most of Australia's leading theatres, two Logies for The Secret Life of Us and a history-making win as the first Aboriginal actress to win an AFI Award for a leading role, Deb remembers her beginnings. "I am incredibly fortunate to have been one of the many artists nurtured by this great company," she says.
  
  "I will always be indebted to La Boite. It gave me my very first opportunities as an actor - Kate in The Taming of the Shrew and the very first showing of Wesley Enoch's The 7 Stages of Grieving as part of the Shock of the New Festival. Both productions acknowledged that I could play roles that were blind to my colour, as well as celebrate the stories that are important to me as an Aboriginal actor.
