THE CHAIRS by Eugene Ionesco

THE CHAIRS by Eugene Ionesco

This is a diamond of comic and theatrical invention.

Ionesco's absurdist masterpiece is a brilliant balance of the intimate and the epic, has a cast of hundreds (OK, most of them are invisible), is highly physical (think Marx Brothers frenzy), and its climax is one of the greatest in modern theatre. In Martin Crimp's sparkling translation it's sharper and shinier than ever.

Poppet and Petty-Pie have been married for centuries, or maybe only 70 years. They live in a house surrounded by water and pass the time with private games and half-remembered stories. Tonight they are preparing for a great party at which the Orator will deliver the ultimate message: the meaning of life. As guest after guest arrives, the chairs pile up and everything is in expectation…

And who to direct? We could think of no one more suited than Brian Lucas, the Brisbane director and choreographer with an international reputation for creating breathtaking works of physical theatre, dance and visual illusion.

And joining him as Petty-Pie and Poppet we're thrilled to welcome two legends of Queensland theatre, Jennifer Flowers and Eugene Gilfedder.
